What's the difference between Nitro and Nitro Basic?
Discord sells two paid tiers, and the names hide how different they are:

If you're deciding purely on price, Basic covers emoji-and-uploads; everything social (boosts, profile flex, HD streams) needs full Nitro. What is Nitro credit?
Nitro credit is stored subscription time. If someone gifts you Nitro while you already have an active subscription, the gift doesn't vanish and doesn't stack on top — it's saved as credit and applies automatically when your current paid period ends. Promo and Quest rewards work the same way: a '1-day Nitro credit' is simply one day of Nitro queued to apply when your active time runs out (or immediately, if you have none).
Credit is also what protects you when buying ahead: a gift link opened while a subscription is active is never wasted, it simply extends the covered time. You can see the queued time in User Settings → Nitro, where Discord lists the current period and any credit waiting behind it. Credit for Basic and for full Nitro is tracked separately, so a Basic gift on a full-Nitro account is stored as Basic time.
Does Nitro stack?
Perks never stack — two subscriptions don't give you 1000 MB uploads or 4 boosts. Time queues instead: redeeming more Nitro while subscribed extends your covered period (as credit), it doesn't multiply anything. The 2 free Server Boosts stay 2 whether you're on monthly or yearly.
The only thing that adds up is time. Twelve monthly gift links queue into twelve months of Nitro exactly like one yearly subscription would; the perks, the badge and the two boosts are the same for the entire period. This also means a cheaper monthly gift is never a worse deal than a yearly one on Discord — you just renew when the credit runs out.
What do Friend Passes give your friends?
Every full-Nitro member gets 3 Friend Passes to share. Each pass gives a friend a free 2-week trial of full Nitro. Conditions: the recipient can't have had Nitro in the last 30 days or already used another trial, and you need to be a paying member for about 5 days before the share option appears. Passes are a genuinely free way to let a friend test perks before they buy.
Sharing works from User Settings → Nitro → Friend Passes: you pick a friend and Discord sends them the trial. The trial itself is full Nitro without the two boosts, and it converts to a paid subscription only if the friend adds a payment method and does not cancel — cancelling keeps the free two weeks running.
How can you tell if someone has Nitro?
There's no public list — you read the profile:
- the Nitro badge on their profile (shows how long they've subscribed),
- an animated avatar or profile banner,
- custom profile theming and effects,
- custom emoji used across servers.
Any one of those is a giveaway; none of them can be faked without an active subscription.
Is Nitro a one-time purchase?
Nitro itself is a recurring subscription — monthly or yearly. What IS one-time is a fixed term bought once, with no auto-renewal.
